Another Gem

While unpacking my room, I found yet another old poem. This one is from at least a year ago, but given recent events it seemed timely.

It's called "To Father:"

You have never had the spine
To do the things you should
To love your children as they are
And be the best you could

You have never had the will
To see things as they are
To clear your head of dust and drink
And drug-begotten stars

You have never been a man
I doubt you have the parts
I'm tired of your early ends
And all of your false starts

I hope that someday he finds the spine, but like you, I doubt people who are like that have the parts.

Fortunately in spite of everything, you seem to have the spine to be the best you can. And that makes me smile.

Early ends. Nice.

This sounds sadly familiar. Not my dad but my husband....
