Tomorrow

I’ve prayed and I’ve prayed. I’ve worried countless hours. In the morning I’ll cast my ballot and, after that, will have done all I can do. After four years of horror it seems unbelievable that things should come to a head in less than a day, but here we are.

Across the country businesses are boarding up, people are sealing themselves behind locked doors, and individuals are stockpiling weapons and food. It is difficult to envision any scenario wherein Trump’s backers are not moved to violence, whether of the exuberant or the enraged kind, but should he lose—and please, merciful God, let him lose—then both he and they will be incalculably worse. And then there are those, nominally on our side, who are all too eager to torch and destroy should the vile man remain in office. I hope each and every one who would pillage takes the time to vote instead.

It feels like the entire future hangs on the precipice and yet all roads lead to catastrophe anyway. I don’t know how we got to this point. I just hope we can get past it.

It is a scary time in our land. I hope we get through it without too much more pain.

If he trails by less than a landslide, the lawyers will be out for weeks trying to disenfranchise voters via the courts. It just now occurred to me that that could actually be a good thing, because it will mean that the viollence prone will have nothing to become violent about as the weeks drag on. Maybe by the time the rersult is known, they'll have had time to get used to the idea. And so far the federal courts have shown no willingness to invalidate decisions of the state authorities.

Of course, I join you in hoping that Trump will ultimately be the loser.

As someone politically in the middle, these posts really confuse me. None of our businesses are boarded up though I did see one street on the evening news the night before somewhere in this country, one street out of millions. I feel no sense of impending doom if either side wins. Every election is the "most important election of our lives" according to the people on the previously losing side. They are all important for sure but here in the political middle, they are no different than the 40+ elections before this.

I also live solidly in a swing state and have not seen four years of horror from any of the past handful of presidents. I have seen people moan about a president and perhaps some legislation that the legislature (not president) passed but life has always moved on. As a history buff, there have been many more elections that were much more contentious than this one. I'm sure many people in those times felt that the future then was on the precipice and yet we still carried and survived.

No matter who ultimately wins, I am confident that we will still carry on and survive. I also know that to nearly half the population, the next election will be the "most important election of our lives", it will also be contentious and for a segment of the population, they will feel we are on the precipice of catastrophe. It's all a matter of perspective.

Wise words from Ed.

As another who sits in the middle (as much as I dislike both major candidates, they each offer both positives and negatives for me), I feel certain I will survive the next four years. And I feel compelled to say that, despite what is flashed across the media, I know many Trump supporters who are normal, sane, clear-headed, rational people. I don't believe either side can be lumped into a one-size-fits-all category.

I see no positives in trump. I see a very dangerous man. His private talk with Putin hours before he pulled American troops back in Syria even as Russian troops moved forward to attack people who had been loyal allies. Our military disagreed with that, knowing that it was a death sentence for any person who had worked with the American military. But our president issued the order. Later when it came up that the Russians had put a bounty on the head of our military, trump had MULTIPLE conversations with Putin, and said multiple times that he didn't discuss it with Putin because 'It. Never. Came. Up.' That alone is enough negative in my mind to know that our president cannot be trusted. There are so many other things.. Yesterday, I watched him on television attacking the very democratic process that put him into power. Yesterday his son tweeted that patriots need to prepare for war. These are reckless, dangerous words. I have the proof that I need to know this man is a clear and present danger to my country, and its people. He's leading now in both Pennsylvania and Georgia. He is leading in Nevada. I believe by the end of this day, we will see a conclusion, and I think tonight, we will all sleep better, BB.

Well I've arrived here two months after you wrote it and only a day or two before Biden's inauguration.
Trump lost and wasn't gracious. Never in my life would I have expected to see the things that have happened in these last few weeks

Let's talk about yesterday! I found myself feeling very hopeful.

Checking in after a long absence. Fascinating times we live in. Probably also said by everybody, everytime (cf: Hamilton "how lucky we are to be alive right now"...oh wait...that was written recently...oh well.)

We are still arguing at dinner tables over whether the impeachment process is a waste of time or an important statement. I suppose it makes a change from talking about border closures and new variant strains of COVID.

I'm getting cynical as I get ever older (which is better than the alternative...)

Anyway. Hi BB. Hope you're doing ok!xx
